Controversy Strikes as Boston Pushes Minnesota to Game 5
A tightly contested goaltending duel in Minnesota ended in controversy as it appeared that Minnesota had won the Walter Cup for the first time in history, but the would-be game-winning goal was overturned for goaltender interference.
The clip of the play is here or below.
I was watching live and as soon as it went in, I said out loud "there's no way they allow this, right?"
No, no they will not.
This was absolutely the right call, and it took a ton of guts to overturn a double-overtime, championship-winning goal. Not even a minute of game time later, Alina Müller sniped a wrister to force a Game 5 in Boston on Wednesday.
It robbed us all of some great story threads too. Sophie Jaques, former PWHL Boston player, scoring the championship-winning goal in double overtime against her former team? Delicious. PWHL Minnesota winning the first Walter Cup at home? Wonderful. A thrilling end to an exciting season.
However, it definitely should not take away from what was an incredible back and forth contest. The goaltending was amazing, there were points when both teams traded chances back and forth. So many near misses for both teams. Boston played an incredible defensive game, consistently clogging the neutral zone to slow down Minnesota, and getting sticks in passing and shooting lanes to disrupt Minnesota's flow. Minnesota continued pressing with their speed and skill.
This is going to culminate in what will be a thrilling finale on Wednesday on YouTube. Be sure to turn in. Even more history is going to be made.
